Understanding a Search Engine

How does a search engine work?

A search engine works using three functions to do its job. The first function is the use of a web crawler, which is a computer program that feeds on information from pages it visits. The second function is indexing whereby the information feed on by the web crawler is stored as data allowing users to access the third function of searching. As the third function users search the engine to produce information satisfying to their needs.
